Ok, now I've REALLY fixed my sidebar links. Promise.

I fixed the link on my sidebar to Brother --->
A quote from his page:

"Wherever your mind lives, that is where your life is headed. The thoughts you think most frequently, willingly and intensely have the power to shape and define the reality of your life."

-- Ralph Marston

Also, Veela changed her template, which made me think updates were coming. I was sadly, sadly mistaken.

I meant to post about my trip home over a week ago, but I'm pretty lazy and never got around to it.

It was quite fun, with the exception of an eye infection / scratched retina that kept me from going out as much as I wanted to. I must be an especially cozy host for germs - I catch EVERYTHING. I flew home on a Wednesday, and on Friday when I woke up my eyes were a bit sore. I attributed it to being out too late the night before, but as the day went on, it got worse and worse. I must have looked like someone killed my cat with all the tears streaming down my face.

It got to the point where I couldn't open my eye and light hurt SO bad. I self diagnosed myself with a detached retina (thanks WebMD!), so since my family doctor wasn't around, we headed to the emergency department. Three hours and a box of tissues later, my eye was getting worse and the waiting room kept getting more and more full (turns out there were some stabbings and the ONE doctor on duty was busy with them and hadn't taken any new patients since 6am). My mom found out about a walk in clinic across town, so we left ER and headed over. We walked in and were out TEN minutes later, prescription in hand and eye patch on.

Wearing an eye patch for a few days made me glad to not be a pirate. I couldn't read, watch TV or look at a computer screen -- it was entertainment hell. I slept a lot.

All seems to be better now and the rest of my trip was a success, but far, far too short.

In other news, I have Pearl Jam tickets! And I didn't have to line up outside to get them! My brother is a member of their fan club, and they reserve a block of seats for members that you can buy online. Mike did that weeks ago, so while everyone has been freaking out about getting tickets and making plans to line up overnight, I sat back feeling kinda smug. I have tickets! And I didn't have to be outside in the rain for hours and hours!

And lets not get started on the rain -- I haven't seen the sun since May 16th. 12 days is a long time to endure rain, drizzle, fog, and the frequent downpour. BRING ME SOME SUMMER!

What sucks:

Sudden work emergencies (ie, web developer goes missing and you don't have the site that was scheduled to be launched TODAY)

What rocks:

Friends and family offering their expertise (at no charge) to help you out of a bind

Coincidences

I’m constantly in awe of the coincidences of life. Just yesterday I was thinking about my first co-op workterm. It was absolutely hellish, but the saving grace was my co-worker, Cate. She was my “cool breeze in hell” and we actually got tattoos on the spur of the moment one day to commemorate our summer of hell. It’s been three years since then, and we’ve completely lost touch. Last I heard she was living up North.

Yesterday I was hit with a wave of nostalgia for that summer. Not the work or most of the people, but I was remembering one crazy night at the Marquee with Cate and a German jazz band (DePhazz), the fun we’d have shopping in our off time, and the endless hours we spent obsessing about work and it’s complete horridness. I listened to the CD on the way to work today, and what should arrive in my inbox this afternoon? An email from Cate!

I hadn’t heard from her in years, not since right before she moved up North. I hadn’t listened to that CD in years either. Something put her in my mind yesterday, and today she contacted me.

Not much in the grand scheme of things, but it’s happened more then once that I’ll think of someone random and then they’ll somehow reappear in my life shortly thereafter.

If the universe is listening, let me just say:

matt-choo, matt-choo, matt-choo

(my first ever crush)

I had to go to Sackville, NB this weekend for a business conference. It's a beautiful little town, but not all that much to do.

The highlights and lowlights of my trip:

>> Getting lost in a town of 5,000. I blame faulty maps and bad directions from the townspeople, but the fact remains that I was completely, hopelessly unable to find the Tantramar Wetlands.
>> Faking a British accent. I didn't do it on purpose, but whenever I talk to someone with an accent I unconsciously start to mimic it. I realized what I was doing when I said "oh, quite!!" ... I never say quite. I don't think he noticed -- or he was too polite to comment.
>> Walking up to a Dean of Science, and chatting away about my program. He interrupted me to ask if I was Meaghan, to which I replied of course I was (I was wearing a name tag for goodness sake) .... He said: "Oh, that's what I thought. But why does your nametag say Nancy Fournier??" Yes, I put on the wrong name tag. Way to look professional.
>> Visiting a bar with the worst beer in the world. Not sure exactly what the problem was, but we tried both bottled and draught, and both were subpar. The bar was pretty crowded though, so apparently beer quantity, not quality is the important thing in Sackville.
>> FREE BEER. Leaving the above mentioned bar to find something a little tastier, we succeeded in finding ONE other open establishment. The bartender was too drunk to remember serving us, so she only charged us for two of our four drinks -- then she refused to pick up the payment we had left on the table. After a half hour of waiting, we picked up the money and left again. Although as a server I felt some guilt at this dine and dash (drink and dash?), we were the ONLY people in the bar and there was no reason for her to not come take our money. And if she is too drunk to do her job, then that isn't our problem.

Overall, the trip went quite well compared to the last conference I attended.

Next up, a chemistry conference in St. John's ... Do I know anyone taking Chemistry?
